Beim Überqueren des Donaukanals fallen mir Wörter auf, ins Geländer eingraviert. Ich schaue kurz hin und gehe weiter, da mir die Zusammenhänge unklar sind – und bleiben.
Ein paar Tage später komme ich an besagter Stelle wieder vorbei. Und da mit einer Kamera unterwegs sein für mich auch immer gesteigertes Interesse an der Umgebung bedeutet, schaue ich mir diese eingravierten Wörter genauer an. Den Zusammenhang verstehe ich erst, als ich die Information auf der Gedenktafel am Ende der Brücke lese.
Am anderen Ende der Brücke angebracht, hätte nämlich die Abfolge der eingravierten Wörter gleich Sinn gemacht.
Crossing the Danube Canal on one of its bridges, I noticed words engraved into the handrail. And as I was not able to figure out what it was saying, I passed them by without taking further notice.
A few days later my walk takes me back to this bridge. This time I have my camera with me, which usually triggers an increased interest in what is around me.
Still wondering what this engraving is all about, I stop at the end of the bridge in front of a sign, which tells me that the engraving is a poem by Ilse Aichinger.
In order to properly read the engraved poem, I would have to return to the other end of the bridge in order to understand what has been engraved so skillfully into the handrail.
Ilse Aichinger (1921-2016), a well know Austrian poet, created the poem “ Winter Response” in memory of her relatives.
It was from this bridge, that she saw her grandma, her aunt and uncle being transported on an open lorry to a concentration camp, where they were later murdered.
