Clean up and pay – ein frommer Wunsch?

    —————

The Goertschitztal, a lovely area in Carinthia, a county in southern Austria next to Italy. One day tests made on milk in a supermarket (Rewe) show traces of HBC contamination. The scandal is out, no chance to cover it up any more. And the bad news gets worse and worse every day.
Milk, meat, water – everything contaminated because of the careless handling by some companies.

Vienna on a sunny October day. At the Gregor-Coch square people from Carinthia, some of them in traditional garments, hold up signs with different slogans, one of them reading: “Please save the Goerschitztal”. A very touching saying and extremely polite.

An organic farmer (photo #6) tells me that his blood tests show lots of chemicals from the contamination in the area. People are concerned not only about their health. They certainly expect politicians in their area to make companies who caused the mess “clean up and pay”. Which was obviously wishful thinking; that’s why they had come to Vienna to make their voices heard.

The atmosphere is gentle and calm. People with their signs are very determined and yet soft and touching at the same time.
All one can hope is that their voices are heard. They will need all the help they can get, that’s for sure. And good lawyers as well.

Big hurdles and mighty opponents are waiting.
